What Size Table Should I Buy?

It’s one of the biggest decisions when buying a table.

We’re here to help!

Once our clients have decided on a style and color of table for their home or business, the most common question is, “What size table should I get?” The answer is different for everyone, but here are some general rules we go by to determine the best size table for your space that will also seat the number of people you need. Still can’t decide? No problem! Most of our table styles can be customized to extend for additional leaves so you can have extra space when you need it. Contact us today to customize your table!

When Choosing a Table Size we Suggest:

  • Select a table as large as your space allows.
    • The absolute minimum space you should have around your table is 24″. This is enough space for the chairs to pull out but not enough space to walk comfortably behind the chairs when someone is seated. 36″ of clearance around the table is recommended to allow for a walkway.
    • If your space is tight you may want to consider a bench on a side closer to a wall. We build those too! We can customize the bench to match your table
    • To Determine the largest size table that will fit in your room you can measure the length and width of the room and subtract 6 feet from each measurement. For Example if your room is 9′ 6″‘ x 14’ the maximum recommended table size would be 96″x42″. Check out this drawing for reference.
How To measure your room for a table
  • Another thing to consider is how many people do you need to fit around the table?
    • It is recommended to allow 22-26″ per place setting. You can multiply this by the number of people you would like to seat on each side of the table.
    • Chairs range in width from 16″ – 30″ so take your chair selection into consideration as well.
    • If you only need to sit a few people on a daily basis but host larger gatherings, it might be best to get a smaller table that extends. For the larger gatherings you could push that limit of 36″ clearance around the table, then close the table up to clear the walkway for everyday use.
    • We offer butterfly leaves that fold up and store under the table. This makes opening and closing the table quick and easy.

  • If space is limited consider a round table or an oval table.

  • Consider what kind of hosting you will be doing. It’s generally more comfortable to squeeze and extra person in for a game night or discussion than it is to squeeze more people in for a formal dinner.
